Elephant Car Insurance Question

I recently in August changed my car insurance to elephant from more than. Now i orginally got a good quote for myself and my fiancee. Then i asked for the price to add my mother in law as an additional driver (she has a provisional license held for 8 months) and my fiancee was going to teach her to drive. Now obviously with her on the policy it was dearer but still a good deal so we decided to go with the three drivers altogether. Now i pay monthly premiums, so my mum passes her test yesterday and i called elephant to take her of my policy, only to be informed that i would still have to pay the dearer premium even though its only 2 drivers on the policy now rather than 3. Now this is different to what elephant told me in the begining when i purchased the policy i was told when my mother passes her test the monthly premium would go down. Can someone give me some advice as i never had a problem doing this with my previous insurer more than.

Complain to Elephant that you expect some reduced premium. Advise them you were told you could expect a reduced rate when you took the policy out and ask them to dig out the call recording. Remain polite and calm throughout, sticking to the facts and you will hopefully be helped out.

What exactly has occured though? Have you removed her from the policy or just told them she now has a full licence? If the latter, she is actualy now a slightly higher risk than before, since she is (or can) be out driving alone and inexperienced, so I would expect them to increase or maintain the premium.
  • I have car insurance with Bell which are part of the Admiral group which Elephant is also in. My recommendation is only phone their customer service line between 9-5. If you phone outside of those times you'll have to speak to someone in India.
My advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

Premiums never really go down though if someone passes their test, reason being... new driver, not confident, on their own in the car without someone watching their every move

Statistically they're more likely to have a crash, so in turn premiums either stay the same or go up.

Hi there, my mum isn't going to be on the insurance as she has her own car now so i wanted to completely remove her from the policy not just change her from a provisional to full license.

It could be that the people remaining on the insurance are considered higher risk than your Mum and hence the policy is priced for those people. I have found that quotes actually reduce by adding a parent to the policy even though logically this does not make sense ! Have done this several times for my son and saved hundreds by adding his mum to the policy even though he is the main driver and the policy is in his name.
It's difficult to get anything back from these budget insurers; try if you like but I think you will end up frustrated and no richer.
