Additional credit cards, do they associate the holders?

Good afternoon, thanks for reading.

Does anyone know if an additional card links that person financially to the account holder? Or is it dependant on the issuer?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think a financial association is created when you get an additional card holder. Credit cards are usually 1 main cardholder who is responsible for the debt solely. There maybe exceptions though.

I was speaking to MBNA last week and the lady was asking me if I wanted an additional card for my g/f. She mentioned as part of the conversation that no financial link would be created between us.

    Cheers Ben.

Anyone else got anything to add, maybe where a provider DOES make an association?

They make association if you have joint current account or mortgage - that is for definite.

But I have the feeling that I was associated with my OH when he got me additional credit card to his account with Halifax many years ago... Cannot 100% confirm it now though.

My OH is an "additional" card holder on my CapitalOne card - no link was made between us for that. Opening a joint account however created an immediate link.
My posts are my own opinions based on my experiences and info gathered from sites such as this.

Interesting one this has for one of my particular cards it did. They are now also doing additional checks on authorised users to do with money laundering etc. So chances are if it doesn't now, it soon will.

Barclaycard do not create the link, I'm 100% on this.

  • There is no credit agreement between the additional card holders and the credit card company. The only agreement is with the primary card holder. The credit card is NOT a joint account so there cannot be a financial link between primary and additional card holders on the credit history. Neither is there a record of the additional card holder having the card on their history.

What MAY happen is that when an additional card holder is added, an identity check is done which can show up on the additional card holder's credit history (as a search) but there is no financial link recorded between the primary card holder and addtional card holders.

Would be interested to hear more about INT1's experience though.
