You shouldn't have to pay him for the pump as it didn't fix the fault.

I only charge for the part that actually fixes the problem.

If I mis-diagnose, then it is my own stupid fault, so I bear the consequences and sadly the cost.

You, the customer, should not have to pay for anyone elses incompetence.

You may not need a new fan, maybe just a good service.

I hear what you say and I concur with it. He kept insisting that the problem was pipework related and I was almost certain it was within the boiler. I just felt that the whole thing was going to drag on indefinitely and I was a bit worried about his proposal to flush the system in case flushing it actually drove sludge into a couple of narrow bore pipes that I'd already changed a year or two ago because they were sludged up.

I was also worried about the competence of his work since he left the cover off of the electric connectors on the secondhand pump he fitted. Even though he's fitted a new pump the cable entry point is not properly secured as it should be, but it's a minor point. Just before he was about to leave I noticed water dripping profusely from the central bleed screw on the new pump. I asked him about it and he said it would stop. I said that I doubted that it would given the amount of water it was leaking and so he got a screwdriver and tightened it three quarters of a turn and it stopped dripping. But had I not noticed it, he'd have left it like that.

The point I'm trying to make is that I did not want him delving into the boiler in case he actually did something that worsened the situation.

He's probably spent around 5 hours here, although there is no benefit to me. In fact, as I said earlier, I'm lighter to the tune of £110. I'm mindful that he spent this amount of time here and that it is reasonable on the one hand that he should be paid something. Yet on the other hand I feel kind of cheated and that feeling is exacerbated by the fact that he continually insulted my intelligence by insisting that the first replacement pump was new.

He is registered etc, but one is left wondering about the effectiveness of the regulator in ensuring competency standards are maintained.

I'm not sure whether this is for complaining generally or just about gas work:

Also, your local trading standards/consumer direct will make a note of any complaint on their database.
