Tesco Lost Receipt - Exchange question?

I've lost a receipt for a jacket that I want to take back to Tesco. Its a F&F own brand range for £35 which I bought on Saturday night. I paid cash and didn't even use my clubcard which I could kick myself now I can't find the receipt. I am planning on takin it back because it doesn't fit right - it still has the tags on.

I would like to know the following:
  • Can I exchange it for something different like a book/cd etc?

  • If I can only exchange it for clothing, what happens if the clothing I want to exchange it for doesn't come to £35?

Hope someone can help? :o

They may take it back, but out of good will only, even if you had your receipt they would not be obliged to exchange/refund, just because it doestn fit. You should have tried it on in the shop to make sure it fit, why didnt you.

Other than that, legally you dont have a leg to stand on.

Think yourself extremely lucky if they do but dont hold your breath.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Thanks but I couldn't try it on the changing rooms close of an evening.

I know they don't legally have to do anything but I was wondering what there store policy is? Anyone else had any experiences??

Actually, you can return tesco's own items without a receipt. They'll have no issues exchanging it. You could probably even get a refund if you tried too
  • I tried to exchange 2 pairs of girls leggings yesterday for a smaller size, still had tags on but no reciept & Tesco In Huddersfield would do nothing.
NO RECIEPT = NO EXCHANGE :(

I had the same problem with B&Q recently - even though the item in question was faulty. Looks like companies are tightening up their returns policy in the face of this recession.

An exchange is not a right, its an act of good will on the part of the shop. The best hope you could have is to:
    • Make sure the item is in resellable condition, do not remove any tags.
    • Try to get any sort of a proof of payment: card bills, time &day of purchase, till of purchase, cashier etc incase they can track the payment.
    • Speak to the most senior person available at the time: don't demand to speak to someone more important, its likely to get backs up and cause the staff member to agree with the original person you spoke to. A better tactic is to ask "is there anything you can do at all?"
    • Try to exchange like-for-like. The exact item on another size is one option but another item of clothing may also do. I have to say I would imagine you will have problems trying to exchange clothes for a non clothing item as they have recently had their "double up" event and may assume you took part and paid half for the item in question which is why exchanging for clothes may be your only option.
