Is he insured?

My son is 19 and drives both of the two cars that his Dad (my ex) owns, both cars are in Dads name. My ex has had a severe stroke and is in hospital, and will probably not be able to drive again, or not for a very long time. My son is a named driver on the policy but is he still insured to drive the cars? at least until we are asked to renew the policy? if not, will it be possible to get him insured on the cars and pay myself (he is a student) even though the cars are not in mine or my sons name?

If the cirumstances have changed and your son has become the main driver, then the policy needs to be amended.
This may be tricky because under the Data Protection Act they may not be prepared to discuss the policy with anyone else.

Did your ex prepare a power of attorney by any chance?

I had a similiar experience, my father had a stroke, I called up his insurance company and added me to the policy for £19. They were very helpful and considerate with the issue. Just explain the situation and any reasonable person will help. It should be easier as son already on policy I was not.

Aslo nothing to say your ex wont drive again and the car still needs to be insured.

You need to advise insurance of the stroke, and possibly the DVLA if he isnt able to drive.

I havent got round to the DVLA as its just myself and my father, and I have a pertner, 7 year old and 1 year old also to look after.
I all have learnt is from others on many sites.

Is one of the cars really your son's?

They will probably give you some grief concerning DPA, but alot of people on the other end of the line are unsure what they cannot say and talk about the account. I would assume if your sons name is on the as a named driver he should at least be able to get further than yourself.

Is your ex able to speak at all. Generally what I do is call up whoever I need to speak to, then say speak to my dad who goes through security then hands me the phone.
