Sliding Sash (Upvc) Windows

I'm looking into replacing my windows and door with sliding sash windows in whitegrain and a composite door.
There are 9 windows (one of which is an arch window) and one door.
I've only had one quote so far £8200. That sound like a lot of money to me but I'm told by all the people I've had round to quite that between 800 to 1000 per window is normal for sliding sash. Is this about right? I haven't really haggled with the guy yet.
I'm waiting for 3 others to come back to me but I do like the sound of this company they are a long standing co in the area and manufacture their own windows. They want £800 deposit and the rest on completion which also suits me.
Any Advice welcome, (unless you are just going to suck your teeth and say, sliding sash? they're expensive, them!)

I've just had another guy round who tells me his quote won't be more than £6000 so I guess that gives me a bit of an idea.MFW Start Sep 07 £79484, Now £587740

I had the following quote to upgrade our current rubbish wooden sash windows to new double glazed wooden sash windows:
All will be new double glazed opening sashes. Manufacture of new hard wood sliding sashes, upgrading of the glazing to double glazed units and professional draft sealing.
1 x 590 x 1670
1 x 965 x 1670
1 x 590 x 1670
1 x 969 x 1670
1 x 965 x 1597
1 x 765 x 1670
1 x 760 x 1345
£7000
Seems pretty steep to me. Think i'll just spend the 7k on turning the heating up!0 -
Idonex, the other thing with the wood sash windows is you need to factor in maintenance, they need treating and repainting every so many years (some co's say every year, one said every 3 yrs) thats not going to be cheap.
It looks like the final price is going to be around £6700, thats for 10 windows, 6 of which also have an astragal bar, and a composite door.MFW Start Sep 07 £79484, Now £587740 -
Hi Mm,
Don't usually post on his forum. I have recently had quotes for 6 x upvc sliding sashes and 2 other windows. Quotes ranged from £7500 (reduced from £20k - salesman from a big window co) to £6500 for a local company that will manufacture themselves so your seems pretty reasonable.

Thanks Urg,
I've now given the job to what ended up being the midde quote, (£6730) he was personally recommended to me by the pickiest person I know so we'll see if he lives up to his reputation.MFW Start Sep 07 £79484, Now £587740
