New Car Driver Insurance

Can anyone possibly help?
I passed my driving test yesterday and obviously looking to insure my new car. As we all know, it will cost a fortune first time, as insurance companies will assume all 20 year old lads like myself are gonna drive horrendously.
Can anyone help me with the best companies to go with?
My car only cost £400, and the cheapest insurance I can find is £1300 (Third part only)
HELP!!!

Have you got someone older than yourself that you can add on as a named driver? Do a quote keeping yourself as the main driver (otherwise you would be breaking the law) but add someone on as a named driver (even if they only ever drive the car once or twice) and it usually brings the premium down. FWIW when I passed my driving test I insured with Tesco and paid £97 per month fully comp which isn't horrendous for an 18 year old.:happylove DD July 2011:happyloveAug 13 [STRIKE]£4235.19[/STRIKE] £2550.00 :cool:0

I did try that. I added my Mum as a named driver.
Tesco, even with her as a named driver, I was quoted £2200 :eek:0 -
Quinn Direct or Orange Marmalade or Collingwood
do some good quotes for young drivers0 -
Admiral seem to be best I've found about £1300. They offer some Bonus Accelerator option, which seems to make it cheaper?0

Try comp cover with a high excess if you don't intend to claim for own damage. Most insurers don't do or want to do TPO any more.
The bonus accelerator policy is fine but not all other insurers will accept the NCD you earn from Admiral in the shorter period.
£1300 sounds like quite a good deal in the current market though.
You can also try Coverbox. Have you tried the direct only people - Direct Line, Aviva, possibly elephant? Try some of the brokers who insure modified cars as they might do cheaper cover for younger drivers too.
Avoid Quinn, though I think they can only do provisional at the moment since they went bust earlier this year.
Finaly, remember that cost is not really much related to the value of your car, but your potential liability. Somone hit a cyclist in the late 1990s, and in the last few weeks his insurers have been ordered to pay out £14 million (plus their no doubt epic legal costs bill). You can do a lot of damage with a motor.0 -
Have you tried Bell, they have been cheaper than others recently.0

£1,300 sounds pretty good and most established insurers will accept the accelerator bonus. Remember that the policy usually only runs for ten months. Are you 21 any time soon?0
