Property management Companys rip off???

I have just let my flat which is on a small complex. I have to pay groud rent and service charges which are far to high anyway and now I have rented the property they want me to pay them £350.00 for the privilege. Is this right?

  • Are you sure that this charge isn't for the freeholder to give their permission for you to let the flat rather than the managing agents?

    What does your lease say?

As to the service charges, you can challenge them on the grounds of reasonableness. See https://www.lease-advice.org.uk

You should really ask for their tarrif. This fee could be anything from dealing with the letting of the property (to incl registering details of the AST agreement etc).

You can challenge it through a Leasehold Valuation Tribunal as sooz suggested but I'm unsure how the cost-beneift analysis would help.

Ask them to provide a breakdown of the amount first and the description of the charge they used when they asked you to pay it.
