Courier Insurance

I'm thinking about setting myself as a self employed delivery driver. Does anybody have any advice regarding the insurance I need to take out. I understand I will need Goods in Transit insurance and possibly public liability cover. I'd just like to know which maybe the best companies to approach for these types of insurance and if there is any options for paying in installments as I'm told it can be quite expensive.

You will be best to find a broker who runs a scheme for couriers - there will be some so look via google or/and trade press (e.g. van related magasine).

You need motor insurance for the vehicle that covers business use as a courier. It will come with a high excess and won't be cheap - couriers don't come with good claims experience as a trade!

You will also probably need cover for goods in transit as you suggest - and any office equipment you have plus general PL cover. This can be purchased as a package of covers usualy (though goods in transit for you as a courier may be a seperate cover, a broker with a specialist scheme can arrange this for you).

Your motor cover will include liability cover for when you are driving the vehicle and loading/unloading. Your PL cover will provide cover if you are at walking arround a customer's premises and knock someone down etc.

You are best using a broker since any direct insurers will be set up to deal with more "simple" trades. The broker will be able to offer you advice on the best package or deal/insurer to go with, what levels of sum insured you might need and hopefully some risk management advice.

Oh yes, and most brokers will be able to offer premium finance facilities - either through the insurer or through a third party finance house.
