House and pet-sitting

Any experience out there of the house and pet sitting websites that are around?
Seems to be a lot of demand for house sitting with or without pets whilst people are on holiday or working elsewhere. I met somebody a while ago who had great fun around the country doing this, registered with an agency, and even got paid a small amount plus travel.
Googling this subject, there are loads of sites whereby you register, pay an annual fee of only about £15 - £30, and then contact those adverts that are shown. How genuine are these? They seem very tempting. My concern is that they are teasers to get you to register, and then are not true house-sitting wants. The fee is low, so maybe I am just being cynical, but the other question is how many people are applying for each want? You could pay your money and not get any houses or pets to sit?
Anybody tried this?

I would strongly recommend you only go with well-established companies such as Homesitters who are based near Aylesbury (but have jobs available nationwide), http://www.homesitters.co.uk/or Animal Aunts. http://www.animalaunts.co.uk/
I'm really surprised you're being asked to pay to register your interest - sounds like a scam to me.
