I offered to pay his callout (after all that would STILL be less than what he charged me and with my reduced cost repair by my neighbours, I'd STILL be quids-in) but ended up having to pay the full whack; what he offers to do for free is his own business. He stated free diagnosis and a quote; if I'd agreed to the repair, he'd have built that time into the price - that's business.0

The only problem in that regard is that they were down on Cornwall for two weeks at the time it went down (it worked but would cut out intermittently); as it was, the wife needed the PC for work (ideally) but I do have a reasonable reserve machine that I could set up in an hour or so for her to continue working on. But, as you do, the man was called out because it was... convenient.
OK, Freddie will butt in here. I take said appliance is a lap top and has been used on the sofa and floor etc. You say it cuts out. The laptop is designed to do that if it gets too hot!, to protect itself and the user.
I would get Mrs to get vacuum cleaner and clean the vents, and tell her not to use it on the floor or settee. 9You could if you wish use the vacuumcleaner yourself). This will assist tyhe airflow and ultimately save you another £70 for a replaced PSU, which I am afraid is a reasonable charge.
I would give the same advice on the techie bored.
Also, to other MSEr's, the only thing that should be on the lap is the cat. Putting you laptop there and writing on the bored is a no no, as you precious little piece of glued together electronics sucks not only in air to keep it cool, but also fluff from your <insert fluffy item here>, and hence clogs up.0 -

Sorry, but actually no it isn't. It's a mid-range (ie not cheap crap) HP desktop, kept on a desk with plenty of air around it.0
