How soon should I book travel insurance?

You need to declare not only the asthma, but any condition or operation you or anyone travelling has received treatment for in the past. Some insurers only need details of treatment in the past 1-2 years, some policies state "ever had".0

I wouldn't recommend an annual policy. It seems cheaper but they do not cover you if you book a holiday outside the period of insurance (ie. booked before the period of insurance). Thus if illness or injury occurs in this window you will not be insured.0

You missed my point. The scenario I described is as follows.....
I have an annual policy expiring on the 30th Sept. I have booked a holiday leaving on the 15th September. If I get injured before the 30th September, the insurer will not renew the policy and I will not be able to get insurance that covers me for the cancellation.
This would not occur if I had bought a separate policy for this trip.
Therefore annual policies are ok unless you book a trip the other side of the expiry date in which case you should cover yourself with a new annual policy or a single trip policy.0 -
With annual policies there are 2 occasions when you need to declare any conditions:
1) When you buy and when you renew your policy
2) Whenever you book a trip.
(Some also require you to notify them of changes that occur between booking and the trip departing)0 -

I am sure Quentin will correct me if I am wrong, but I think you will find that with any "decent" insurer will either allow you to continue cover from (in your case) Sept 30 (you may have to re-new prior to leaving on Sept 15). Or in some cases Your policy expires 30th, and you may be covered for trips that COMMENCE PRIOR to that date as long as you are withing the T&C's.

Have you got your dates right? Travelling on the 15th Sept, policy expiring 30th Sept? So are you saying you got injured on hol?
If you meant your travelling on the 30th Sept, policy expires 15th Sept ( your hoping to renew) On the 10th Sept you fall over breaking your leg and unable to travel......... You would be covered on an annual policy as the incident causing the cancellation is within the period of insurance....Even though your travel dates are not
