Council Home???Advice please

Hi all

I apologise in advance if these questions are silly.but realy ai m clue less on the issue.

My brother has a learning difficulty, mental age of 5 as an adult. recives IS nad DLA. mother has multiple illnesses recives IS.Father had separated and was away until a few mnths...he got joint IS claim with mother. I work part time my salary less then £700 a month. House we are living in belongs to older brother who is suffering form stress and financially earning between 500-700monthly.We all (5) adults live in 2 bedroom house(dont ask how we are coping) owned by elder brother.....where paying mortgage is now difficult.

younger brother has applied for council housing 3 yrs ago with my and mums name on application too(dad was way at the time).we are trying haard to get council housing BUT my issue is I have savings of around 20K(over 5yrs) and when you apply for housing do they not check earnings and savings of al ppl whose name is on application????If so are savings going to stop us from getting council home?I am sorry but the money is not enough to buy home.I need to be with mum and brother at the moment becos of me being the un official carer. But the savings are to buy my own home in afew years time.

I really do not know a thing as we have never been in a council home before and the thoughts are like spagetti in my mind.my family urgently needs a home and I feel my savings will stop them from getting that.

what are the procedures?anyone from the housing dept on here or someone been in a similar situation please please shed some light on this.

Thnks in advance

    Savings don't matter, needs do.
People applying for Council housing are given points and the more points you have as a rule the higher up the list you are.
However there is always more people chasing Council homes than there are for rent. I would suggest that you try Housing Associations as well, try your local Council to see if they have a list.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

No, council house allocation wouldn't be affected by the anmount of savings you have.

Councils allocate homes themselves and/or refer people to HA's based purely on need - and as you seem to have various disabilities within your family, you probably would get quite a few points.

Give your local housing department a ring, and explain your circumstances.

They will send you an application form (or it may be that you can go there and fill one in). Tell them about all the family health/disability issues - they will also need you to fill out some medical forms so that they can get all this confirmed from your GP's etc.,

However, in most areas, there is a huge shortage of social housing and you may have to wait quite a while.

What generally happens now is that they register you, give you points/a banding and advise what size of property you will be considered for.

Most councils/HA's operate the 'biddng' system where you can choose 2 properties a month to bid on. Places are allocated by who has the most points from those that have bid.

    Lin :)
You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

It is very difficult to give general advice on this type of issue.

Each local authority run their own allocations scheme - some do take savings into account, others don't.

Some authorities still run systems that are based on points (awarded on need) where the properties are offered to the applicant with the highest point. Most run choice based lettings systems - where applicants must 'bid' on properties - but these vary as well in the way that they give priority to different people.

You do need to speak to someone at the council about your situation. This may be easier to do face to face rather by phone. Give them a call to arrange an appointment rather than just turning up.

Remember - that regardless of the councils allocation scheme you level of savings will be taken into account if you claim HB.
