Hi,
As a family we are looking at setting up our own emails and have seens companies such as '1and1' and 'GoDaddy'.
Without sounding too much like someone from the dark ages, what happens.
If you find a name thats available, go through and pay up... is the website all part of the price?
Do you get an address to log into or do you have to pay for the website it is on as well?
Any help wouold be greatly appreciated.
Chris

Depends on what the offer and what you order.
Obviously you get the domain name. You also usually get
- web forwarding - they will forward anyone looking at https://www.yourinternetaddress.co.uk to wherever your website is hosted (eg Google sites). Usually the person looking at your site can tell it's forwarded (in the address bar of the browser), this can also adversely affect search engine ratings.
- mail forwarding - they will forward all emails to anything@yourinternetaddress.co.uk to your email accounts. Often you can set up different mail forwards eg bob@yourinternetaddress.co.uk gets sent to bobby@hotmail.foo and sue@yourinternetaddress.co.uk gets sent to susan@googlemail.foo
Extras, which may or may not be included
- web hosting, sometimes this is for a very basic site, eg just a few pages using their pre-designed templates,or may be a full site hosting option with content management system like Wordpress
- webmail, where you can read/send email online.
- POP mailbox(es) where you can set up a mail client such as Outlook or Thunderbird to send/receive your messages. Usually you can set up rules so bob@yourinternetaddress.co.uk gets sent to mailbox001@yourinternetaddress.co.uk, sue@yourinternetaddress.co.uk gets sent to mailbox002@yourinternetaddress.co.uk and sales@yourinternetaddress.co.uk gets sent to both bob and sue. This means different people can have their own private email accounts.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
If you just want e-mails then it is normally part of the price. You buy the domain, you get a login for the account (the domain account).
Login and then setup the e-mail addresses you want (including passwords). The help files on the admin section of the domain will give you the settings for setting up your e-mail program to send and receive e-mails for those addresses.
If you want a website as well, you will need to look into it as you may have to pay extra for hosting (i.e., storage of the pages, etc).

If you're primarily after a domain for email, like myself, 1and1 have an dedicated solution, 'Instant Mail', for 69p a month (29p for the first six months). It includes webmail.
I've used them for some years now and find them very reliable, which is something you certainly can't say for all hosting firms.0 -
Another vote for 1and1 as well.
You do actually have to pay for the Email service but as above, it's very cheap otherwise all you get is a domain name and a single web page.
The basic Email service gets you five separate addresses.0 -
Yes, I use 'Instant Mail' too, and have never had any problems with it. The spam filtering is pretty good, allowing you to set up both whitelists and blacklists. If you're primarily after a domain for email, like myself, 1and1 have an dedicated solution, 'Instant Mail', for 69p a month (29p for the first six months).
