tRYING TO INSTALL PC CDROM...HELP!

My son got a cd rom for his birthday and it won't install. Problem with .NET framework 2.0. Says I need to uninstall but looking at control panel, there are quite a few versions of this, all of which won't allow me to uninstall anyway.
Can anyone guide me through this.?? I am on windows xp, which game says is suitable. Get right through the installation wizard and only to find it won't install right at the end.

What game is it and what version of .NET do you have plus the exact error message would help.0

message says:
set up cannot continue because this version of the .NET Framework is incompatible with a previously installed one.
It then refers me to:

Each newer version will supersede the previous version, so the question is: Is the game request .NET framework 2.0 be installed?0

According to the above you have dotNetFx35setup.exe installed.
