Here is some useful info from my friend in Bristol:

First of all - don't wait until January to join a gym! Most places have offers on at their lean times and for gyms this is usually around end of November/ December and sometimes around March when people start cancelling.
I would always check out your Council owned or run facility first. In Bristol this means SLM/ Everyone Active who run most of the Council owned facilities. There are three which have pool and gym and these are Henbury, Horfield and Easton. Although there will be a simular one opening in South Bristol within the next couple of years (this will not be SLM run).
David Lloyd memberships are around £60 wheras SLM ones tend to be £30 - £40.
The other option is to join a cheap gym eg Fitness 4 Less and then pay seperately for using council pools.

Also a note on qualifications of fitness professionals. Your instructor should be registered with the Register of Exercise Professonals and you should be able to check their qualifications online. Despite their high prices, instructors at posh gyms are unlikely to be better qualified, in my experience quite the opposite.

Go and see a few places and get a feel for them as each gym has it's own identity. and don't be afraid to ask if they have any offers coming up - they will have a marketing calender which has offers scheduled in.

    Good luck!

Depends where in Bristol you'd find it convenient to use a gym, but Bannatyne's in Redland fits the bill. We pay £99 pm for a joint membership, and this doesn't have to be with a partner, can be anyone you know. I think it's about £60 single. We could go elsewhere cheaper, but this is very easy for us to get to from work or home, and open at hours which suit us. We've looked into other options, but none are as straightforward, and DH uses the sauna at least twice a week.

David Lloyd has North and South Bristol facilities, and I know the North Bristol one has a pool.
