Car Insurance - how many no claims years do I have?

Please can someone advise how many years no claims I have for car insurance...

1st car insuance policy taken out in Jun/Jul 2006...car written off in Dec-06 (think this ended my policy...not sure though).

2nd car insurance policy taken out end of March 07
(Had no car, therefore no car insurance required until end of Mar 07)

3rd car insurance policy taken out end of March 08

4th car insurance policy taken out end of March 09

5th car insurance policy taken out end of March 2010

Please can someone advise how many years no claims do I have at the end of March-10......is it counted from March-07 as I claimed on policy in Dec-06?

  • Assuming you haven't made any claims since the write-off in 2006, I believe you have 3 years NC..? Am I missing something?

earlier this year my solicitor advised me that she had contacted my insurers at Dec-06 and had reinstated my no claims for the accident.....therefore I'm thinking my no claims period starts in Jun/July 06....but does it matter that I did not have insurance in Jan-07 to nearly end of Mar-07?

****solicitors letter actually said....."I have notified your insurers of the outcome (the other party accepting liability) should you have a no claims discount which requires to be reinstated"

But if that was your 1st policy then you would not have had any no claims so how can it be re-instated???

You certainly picked up a year in each of march 2008, 2009 & 2010 which gives you three years.

As the ’06 claim turned out not to be your fault then you should also get a year for that policy.

Slightly complicated (lots of “if’s”) by the fact that if you claimed on your own insurance and if your insurance was one that ends on a total loss claim then you have effectively lost that years NCB together with about 6 months premium. Both these losses should be recoverable from the TP insurance as they have admitted liability.

Further complicated by the dates, had you not been in an accident you would have renewed in july 07 with 1 years NCB, and so on, ending up with 4 years in July 2010. Because of the accident you’ve ended up with three years in 2010.

As you are entitled to be put back in the position you would have been in had the accident not happened if you CBA you could work out what the reduced NCB has cost you over the years, add in the lost premium and any documented additional costs of having a non fault claim on your record and send the bill to the third party insurance company. They will wriggle but eventually pay
  • Thanks for info....few more questions....

As you are entitled to be put back in the position you would have been in had the accident not happened if you CBA
    what is CBA?

you could work out what the reduced NCB has cost you over the years,
how can I work this out?

    add in the lost premium
is this the loss of insurance cover after Dec-06?

and any documented additional costs of having a non fault claim on your record
what type of costs are these?

look at your premiums over the years and work out how much less they would have been had you had an extra years NCB

Yep, if your policy did end on the payout then you lost 6 months premium

Some companies increase your base premium because you have had a non fault claim, if yours does then you can add the extra costs to the bill
