Hi
My Daughter has just started at university but will be living at home
I am in receipt of housing benefit also council tax and am on income support, i informed income support when she left school and also child benefit and child tax credit i received a letter from jobcentreplus and said that i had told them she would be living at home but they wanted to know on the form how many rooms i had how many i shared ect so filled it in. But my question is have i got to inform the Housing Benefit or has it been done by them sorry this sounds confusing.

Have you ask your daughter to get a Council Tax exemption form from her university, then you need to send that in.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

As she is an adult now in her own right, and independent, she will be expected to contribute a portion towards the rent. Her 'income' if she is not working is her student amount loans, and even if she hasn't taken all that she is entitled to, they will consider the full amount as her 'income' as it's available to her.
Do make sure that you provide evidence to the council that she is a student - as then if you are a single adult, and the only adult living in the house who is not a student, you wil get a 25% reduction in the amount of council tax payable.0 -

Unless she is in remunerative work (above 16 hrs I think) they do not consider her income at all. They might apply the basic £7.40 deduction, but I'm not even sure if they will aplly any charge for a student in full time education.
The banded rates of Non-dependant deductions on apply to those in remunerative work. For example, someone on Incapacity Benefit, with a host of private illness pensions, would still only have the £7.40 deduction applied.0 -

Apologies if mistaken - however, son's student loans were certainly taken into account - and that was two years ago in his situation.0 -
When i was unemployed and claiming LHA my partners student loan was taken into account even though he was paying for his tuition fee's out of this but i have heard of other people having it done other ways so i dont know what the actual proper way is.0

Do you claim HB or LHA? If the latter, how many bedrooms do you have and how many people in the household?0
