Shares, new to this, what do you think of this..

So I'm new to share dealing and I'm planning to invest £250-£500 per month for the next 12+ months in 'long term' shares.
At the moment I'm thinking the price of shares in the various banks seem quite 'cheap' and I figure they will probably be around for the next 10 years. BP seems like an OK bet at the moment and in 5-10 years I would be surprised if they haven't returned to form and a lot of the recent issues are dealt with.
I'll probably pop some into gold as well just to see how that goes.
Additionally I'm going to find some companies that I have a passing interest in including telecoms, cycling, gambling, etc. These will be more 'gambles' than anything else.
Am I heading for failure with this basic strategy? It's not huge sums of money and I can afford to lose it.
I also invest £250 per month in a sharesave scheme at work buying discounted shares @ 117p that are already @ 144p and I can choose to take my £9,000 and run after 3 years or buy @ 117p then sell at market value (so all I would really lose out on is the interest over that period).

You seem to have a view on BP, but the rest you list as if they are random choices. If they are then you will get random results!
Share schemes at work are normally a good bet.0 -
Banking shares a cheap? From my portfolio most are back up to their 'pre-crash' levels already.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j
