Can I take an old mattress to the tip?

As above really. Do local tip/dump/recycling places take old single mattresses?

It isn't suitable for freecycle as its VERY old and in a right old state and not at all good for sleeping on. So it needs disposing of.

Any ideas?

  • Yes. Some local authorities even collect bulky items such as these. Check your local authority website under rubbish/recycling for details

Yep, we've taken a mattress before. It will probably go in non-recyclables but ask the guys there.

A lot of councils will take bulky items but will charge you for the privilege (£20-25 per item I believe).

Check with the tip or the council.
  • We've taken one before - wasn't a problem

My husband took our old one to the tip a couple of weeks ago and they were fine with taking it.
Here I go again on my own....
  • Our local council does one free collection of items per year (upto 3 items, £5 per 4th and 5th), and then charges £75 per additional colllection so it's worth asking. Thankfully they took my old oven and fridge freezer yesterday :)
  • They'll take it, but you might have to drag it in there. If you turn up with a double mattress in a transit (because the item is bulky) they might decree it as trade waste and want to charge you. Park the van outside the gate and drag it in and they don't have a problem with it. Take someone to help you, double mattresses can be heavy and very unwieldy.

Where we are they will take anything as long as you are in a car and not a van...best to give them a call I reckon as seems to vary depnding on tip / council. good luck.

Just took it along and they took it in the normal household waste bin :-) Didn't seem bothered. Didn't think to ring them as it's just two guys wondering around - so assumed they didn't have a phone (couldn't see any sort of office onsite).
