anglian water bill from 2006

I have just recieved an anglian water bill for a property i lived in in 2006 for 5 months. the letter only gives the address and the amount I am meant to owe, it doesnt show any dates.
I am so sure everything was paid up on this account yet they say I owe £70.22. Am aslo a bit miffed as its been so long!
Can I ask them to prove it? or do I have to wait until it reaches debt collection stage?

I'm afraid I don't know either, sorry. I just thought I'd give you a wee bump to get you back up top in time for any-one reading while waiting for their dinner to cook!

  • I would have thought if you are unsure, it is perfectly reasonable that you should ask them to prove that it is you who owes this money. You do not need to wait.

You are entirely entitled to ask them what period this is for as you are certain the account was up to date and settled when you moved out. If it's for the period you where there then you need to look at what they state was used versus the paperwork for when you moved in and out. I assume you gave them final readings when you moved out as well as to the landlord/letting agent?
If it wasn't metered but based on property size then so long as you can prove you paid it (bank statements) then again there is nothing you can do.
I certainly wouldn't wait for it to go to the DCA stage...

it is reasonsable to ask for the period of billing, as above dont wait for dca as they may just instead send you debt to the bulk processing for ccj action
