Which hard drive manufacturers do you recommend?

Hi all,

I find myself in need of a hard drive. I am going to store dvds on it and then connect to TV through a media player.

I am very new to all this malarky, and would welcome suggestions as to which manufacturers to look out for.

Cheers for any help.

Si

I too would recommend Western Digital based on my personal experience of never having had one fail prematurely.

The fact is though that irrespective of brand any hard drive can fail prematurely through no fault of the user.

Western Digital's "My Book" external drives have had numerous positive reviews and therefore are obviously highly regarded. They are available in capacities ranging from 500GB to 2TB have their own pre-loaded smart software and can be password protected. The transfer rate is 480Mb/s.
  • Thank you al for your help.

I will have a read through the reviews thanks for the link John.

Thanks for the detailed reply Knarf44. I was thinking of getting the western digital tv media player so I assume a HD of the same make would be of benefit.

    Cheers Si
  • Having the drive the same brand won't make any difference, but I would also recommend Western Digital. I always use their HDDs these days.

I had two LaCie drives which worked well until I dropped one and lost everything on it :(. So I then bought a Transcend Storejet from Amazon as it's a bit more rugged, not that I'm intending to drop it this time. Price was good too.

I've never had an issue with postage/handling, if a drive is so fragile that it won't survive being sent through the post then it's unlikely to be robust enough for storing your valuable data.
  • I own a Western Digital My Book 500 MB and a 1 TB disk and neither have ever faulted so far. They're a rated brand name in the hard disk drive world.
