No sound from my Dell PC

Hi there,
I have a Dell Dimension 8300 desktop running XP sp 3.
Since a couple of weeks ago, there's been no sound from my speakers. I have checked the obvious, loose cables, volume via Sounds and Devices (Control Panel) etc.
Device Manager shows nothing in error in the sound controllers.
Audio system is a Dell MMS 5650 - there are a yellow, black and green cable into the same coloured jacks on the back of the PC .... I took the lime green connector out of the back of the PC and into my ipod - the speakers work then!!
It has driver Creative Audigy (soundblaster) Audio Processor (WDM) Details... 5.10.0.3550 5.12.1.328 Creative Labs - kX Project PCI+VEN_1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_10031102&REV_04+5.1+32 8eda6f1520075bd3402a408236e6b7b8 02/09/2010 16:09:37 but I got an error trying to update this ("A Driver Has Overrun A Stack Based Buffer") so had to roll back ... from 12/12/2006 6.0.1.124.1 back to 26/03/2003 5.12.1.328.
I looked in the Event Manager and the only entry around the time I lost the sound that looked suspicious to me was:
"Event System category(50)" event(4069) - more details from Properties:
The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was 8007043C from line 44 of d:\comxp_sp3\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp.
But I don't know if that is relevant or not.
I updated the driver for SoundMAX Integrated Digitial Audio, using Device Manager - to no avail. I would've tried deleting it, but could not find it on the Dell site so was wary of taking that action in case I could not get it back!
The PC came with both SoundMAX Integrated Digitial Audio and Creative Audigy (soundblaster) pre-installed by Dell and worked fine for 4 years or so.
So still suffering in silence .... any help appreciated.
Kind regards,
Simon.

All the volume controls on your PC are independant so have a good hunt thru and check none are turned down or muted.
might include
-volume on whatever program you are using (eg itunes, spotify, youtube etc)
-master volume control in windows (control panel >sounds) -also check you have the correct sound output device selected (can have a nasty habit of defaulting away from your sound card to to 'USB' audio if anything with USB audio capabilities ever gets plugged in)
-volume controls in any 3rd party audio drivers/suites etc (soundmax, creative control panel etc)
-physical buttons/controls on the speakers etc0 -

please don't do that.
if you're lucky it won't help, otherwise it may create new and exciting problems mis-identifying your hardware and installing inappropriate drivers

don't worry I took no notice of the drivermagic suggestion!
Actually I have just put in the two Creative CDs that came with the PC, reinstalled the software from them and the problem is sorted :-)
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions.0
