Feather & Down Pillows

Hi Everyone,

I have just bought some duck feather and down pillows as I'm sick of getting 'stay-soft' ones which go flat and hard and we're trying to get some good nights sleep/banish cricked necks.

Thing is, they SMELL :( really musty.

Looking on the net, lots of people mention this phenomenon but I can't find out WHY they smell.

I'm wondering if it's that they're Slumberland ones, 2 for £10 - so pretty cheap - just spotted them in Asda, and that expensive ones wouldn't smell like that. Or do they all smell like that?

Wondering whether to just take them back and wait 'til I can go to John Lewis and get some really expensive ones.

Any advice welcome, thanks.

Of course they smell a bit, they are organic material from a duck!

If you can't stand the smell then take them back to Asda - but it will get less over time.
  • The smell disappears quickly, but you can help it along by sticking them out on the line. :D
  • Cheap ones smell more than dearer ones, but they all smell a bit. Will Asda take them back? I thought shops usually refuse to take pillows & duvets back unless faulty.

So? It doesn't follow that something must smell because it's 'organic'. I'm sure manufacturers have heard of washing and removing smells and know how to do it.
  • Thanks all for the info.
I always wondered why when I stayed in a certain friend's house, the pillow cases/pillows always had this really musty smell to them.
I would think 'ugh' but now I know it's because they are feather and down because mine smell the same!
I've left them out airing today and will try them with 2 pillow cases on each too.
    :)
  • My hair smells like a tramp's anorak but the pillows are soooooo comfy! :)
  • sometimes its because the company that makes them does not wash them as many times as other manufacturers do hence some smell some dont try qvc northern nights pillows excellent (no smell) lol
  • ooh thanks Jac, I watch QVC and have seen the northern nights pillows, will keep that in mind.
