  • there is no such thing as a 125cc moped, a moped is a motorcycle of less than 50cc with a maximum design speed of 30MPH. You can ride a moped (ie 50cc) without L's on a car licence but not a 125cc scooter/motorcycle. If you don't pass your test the CBT expires after 2 years.
Nothing to see here, move along.
  • agreed i have just taken my second CBT as my first ran out before i managed to take my test.
    sorry !

If you got a Full Car Licence before February 1st 2001 then it will have a provisional motorcycle entitlement. I could be wrong, but was led to understand that you could drive under this entitlement for as long as you wanted (but if you wanted to take your bike test, had to have a current CBT)
Check out the DVLA website for the different categories you can drive.

    When to complete a CBT

You will need to complete a CBT if:
    • you want to ride a motorcycle
    • you want to ride a moped
A moped has an engine not over 50 cc with maximum design speed not exceeding 50 kilometres per hour which is approximately 31 miles per hour
If you obtained your car licence before 1 February 2001 you do not need to complete a CBT to ride a moped.

the info is about as clear as mud !!!!!

  • Its not very clear I know but:

If you passed your car test before Feb 2001, you don't need to do CBT or have L-plates to ride a Moped (50cc and limited to 31mph) - just get on and ride off (slowly) into the distance

You must complete CBT and have L-plates displayed to ride anything bigger than a moped (ie 125cc, 100cc, or sub-50cc but capable of more than 31mph (so a derestricted 50cc would require CBT and L-plates))

Must be my age, but you can also ride a classic moped, 50cc, must also be propelled by the pedals, and they can be capable of more than 30mph, like my old Honda SS50 that could do nearly 50mph on a good day, eventually.
