Another post-dated cheque question

Don't all jump on me at once, it wasn't me that did it! It was my employer. He always post-dates our wages cheque to the last day of the month.... which this month happens to be today (Saturday)........... I've got £35 of bank charges coming out on Monday (long story but that was his fault as well).
Anyway, I rang my bank (LTSB) for something else a couple of weeks ago, and was told in no uncertain terms that post-dated cheques could be paid in from date of signature. I distinctly asked him about my wages cheque.
So yesterday we get our wages cheque through the post and take it straight down to the bank. Guess what. the bank refused it as it was dated for today and not yesterday.
So now what am I supposed to do? I'm going down to the bank today to speak to someone (and pay the cheque in). But what happens if they charge me again for not having available funds to pay LAST month's charges?

Well you are correct that the date is meaningless and you should be able to pay it in immediately however it still wont help you as it will not have cleared in time to cover your charges - even if you had paid it in yesterday.0

When I've paid in such cheques over the counter at my bank, I've always been told I can draw against them on the next working day.Tootsie_Roll wrote:Well you are correct that the date is meaningless and you should be able to pay it in immediately however it still wont help you as it will not have cleared in time to cover your charges - even if you had paid it in yesterday.0 -

Buy your boss a calendar and get him to check it before he writes out the cheques. I presume you are paid for the work that you have already carried out. The bank works on a system of working days so why is your boss dating cheques for non working days? I would ask my boss for the bank charges money or get him to swap to a bacs system where he transfers funds direct to the bank accounts so they arrive on time. Does he have online banking?;)0 -
Thanks all that replied.
My boss is a complete waste of space. According to a long term employee, over the last 16 years, all of his staff have requested that he pays them by BACS and he has refused each time.
And yes, I know that the cheque wouldn't have cleared for Monday anyway, but now I have to wait til Thursday for it.
By the way, the bank were no help. Luckily OH's cousin has paid for a couple of things that he owed us for so that will go into the bank at 9am on Monday, hopefully in time to cover the charge.DFW Nerd no 239.....Last Personal Debt paid off Nov 2012!
