Pound and dollar sign not working

Changed to an old keyboard that is less tatty than the previous one. All going well until I tried to do a pound sign and it just doesn't work. All the keys for logos on the number keys work except the pound sign above the 3, the dollar sign above the 4 and the arrow above the 6.

Now I've just found out that the arrows to the left on the numbers ( the calculator bit ) don't work either.........

At this rate I would have put the old keyboard back on but it went off for re-cycling yesterday

I'm hoping I've managed to press something by mistake to knacker something up (is knacker a techie term? oops)

Any advice appreciated

  • it is possible that the key bored is set in the wrong language or the previous driver is still there. What version of windows are you using

    If you're using Windows 7:
    - Open Control Panel and select Region and Language.
    - Click the Keyboards and Languages tab.
    - Click Change Keyboards.
    - Check that the setting is appropriate for your keyboard e.g. "English - United Kingdom".
    - If it's not, click Add and select the appropriate language from the list.

    Assuming you're running XP...

Start -> Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options

On the General tab and on the Advanced tab, change the languages to be "English (United Kingdom)".

OK out, and test the £ key, the " key and the @ key. If those give the correct character then you're done!

Very shortly after: OK, Geoff - just because you can type faster than me...!

You haven't possibly pressed the NumLk key (upper right of keyboard) by mistake?

    Worth checking,

    Good luck
  • Well thanks for your help guys but still no go.

    The language is 'English(Uinited Kingdom).

When I try for instance to get the pound sign I get nothing at all, not even the wrong sign.

I'm ok with " and @ andI haven't got the number lock on.

It goes like this ¬!" % &*()_+ I've put gaps in for the three missing characters.

I'm on Window XP Home edition, version5.1 and the keyboard is from my old computer that was windows98 I think. Perhaps the keyboard didn't like going into storage for so long and got the hump !

Is this a USB keyboard or an old PS/2 one?

Turn Numeric Lock on, hold down Alt and then type 1 5 6 on the numeric pad on the right. Do you get the £ sign?

Now hold down Alt and press 3 6 on the numeric pad; do you get $ ?

  • Well there's my result John, and the keyboard is not USB.

It looks to me that your keyboard is misbehaving! Can you get another one to test with?
  • Me thinks I will be acquiring one of the many keyboards gather dust in the store room at work as a tester.

    Thanks for all your help
