Quick question re Car Insurance/limited mileage

Hi, I hope this is an easy couple of questions for someone to answer.
I'm not in the UK for many weeks of the year, but maintain a home here. My car insurance therefore is for only 3,000 miles a year and I easily stay under that.
However my daughter has my permission to use my car if she needs to. Her car is fine and reliable and more fuel economic anyway.
If she chooses to use my car for a long trip as it is more comfortable she would be driving under her own insurance (she's not named on mine, but has fully comp on hers) but might then increase my mileage to more than 3,000 miles.
Is that acceptable to insurance companies?
How would I explain in the event of a claim?
many thanks for any help.

Firstly are you sure she's covered?
The "Driving other cars" extension is no longer automatic and some people assume it's there when it isn't.
Some companies have withdrawn it so she shoudl check her current policy.
Also are you aware this is 3rd party only?
So if there were a crash where liability wasn't clear then you would be unable to get the car fixed on her insurance (no fully comp cover) and you'd have to wait months for the 3rd party insurer to decide liabiilty. If there was no CCTV and no witnesses then there's a risk it would go 50/50 even if she wasn't at fault.
Are you aware of all this?0 -
thanks for your reply, and yes I was mostly aware - didn't know about the time lag to sort it out though, but I guess insurance companies would choose to work slowly.
The car is a 12 yr Toyota, and fully comp for me & OH was just a few quid more than 3rd party. Daughters policy does cover her for other cars with the owners permission with 3rd party liability.
I am wondering whether to increase the mileage allowed just to avoid a future possible problem?0 -

If your daughter was involved in any crash irrespective of who was liable her insurance wouldn't fix your car!
It would be down to you to pursue anyone liable to get your costs reimbursed.0 -
have you asked how much it would cost to:
increase mileage
Add daughter to your fully comp policyAny posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -
The car is thoroughly reliable, and we have a queue of (3!) people who would take it off us even if it were an insurance write off. I'm not worried at all about the damage to the car it's value is very little.
But I'd like to ensure that in the event of someone claiming from me that the insurance company would recognise mileage over about 1,000 miles per year was insured on another policy. If you think they would not, then I need to up the mileage or deter daughter from driving it.
many thanks for your replies0 -
It won't cost much (if anything) to up your annual mileage by 1000 miles. Ask them. (When you answer the mileage question, it relates to the car not the driver)0

I agree with you Quentin. If your daughter was involved in any crash irrespective of who was liable her insurance wouldn't fix your car!
It would be down to you to pursue anyone liable to get your costs reimbursed.
But if it was a clear cut case e.g. rear end caught on CCTV, then there would be no delay whilst liability was decided (of course they will still be in no rush to pay to the point they may need legal letters).
It was the delay I was trying to highlight with the other insurer where liability isn't clear.
My FIL had a case where liability was not decided for 3 years (after the limit for pursuing a personal injury case expired).
It's certainly not unusual for it to take many months to decide on liability.0 -
I don't think you could ever prove the mileage, and the car is insured for the mileage per year, as it's still on cover for theft, damage when parked etc.0

I don't think you could ever prove the mileage.....
Except that the mileage is freely available to anyone who cares to look at the on-line MOT records.
OP.....With a car that age and your age I'd be surprised if increasing it to even 10k made any significant difference to the premium.
Having said that, you are an existing captive customer so they could well try and make some bonus money from you, I think I'd run some dummy quotes and find out what the increase will be at various mileages so you can pick what you want and know what it should cost when you to ring to change it0 -

Not you couldn't prove the mileage the car had done, you couldn't prove who had done it, so if the daughter does 6000 miles, it would be impossible for the op to prove it wasn't her.0
