Just to re-iterate, you def don't need them anymore. Apparantly you can be trusted to shut your own doors these days, which is nice. Those things are lethal. Never mind kids getting their fingers caught; it's easy to do it as an adult!

I have a new build (2006) 3 storey that has them.

Biggest pain in the **** is that they cause the doors to slam and crack the plaster round the door frames.

  • Hi
Thanks for the responses, but AGAIN can I ask for HARD EVIDENCE online that these do or do not need to be on the doors.
Its all very well forum users saying "this and that" but we're not going to be able to clear things up unless there is something stated on a .gov website somewhere.
I've had a look around but cant find anything?
    Thanks

You can't find them because you asking for evidence about something that doesn't exist.

There isnt going to be building regs/legislation telling you that you don't need them, building regs/legislation tells you what you DO need not what you DON' need.

  • I have been looking at this same thing due to a recent loft conversion and the building regs were changed in 2007 to state self closers were no longer required unless it is a door from house to garage.

    Quote:

When the regulations demand that a fire door is fitted it used to be that a self closing device be fitted to the door. Legislation which came into effect on 6th April 2007 (AD B1) has removed the requirement for self closing devices except for doors between houses and garages.

I found the above from this link:
    http://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/firedoors.htm

I also went onto my local council builing regs site which also confirmed it.

    Hope this helps!
  • OK, now were getting somewhere.
Check out this link to a PDF

    http://www.canterbury.gov.uk/assets/buildingcontrol/approved-document-b-vol1-2006.pdf

The Building Regulations 2000 - Fire safety - APPROVED DOCUMENT - Volume 1 DwellingHouses
    See page 2 appendix B
Self-Closing Devices: Other than doors between a dwellinghouse and an integral garage, fire doors need not be provided with self closing devices.

I take it this is the latest document?

I assume this document is for any dwelling house (ie NOT commercial) So that is
    a) a 3 Storey House (Ground - 1st Floor - 2nd Floor)
    b) changes the fact that door closers are not REQUIRED any longer (other than between house and internal garage) on homes made BEFORE this document?
