I'm usually the first to jump on the back of landlords as my experience of them isn't good.
But with nightmare tennants such as the OP I see why they are the way they are!0 -

It is an admin error and the amount is still owed.
If it went to court a magistrate would simply ask "did the cheque bounce or not?" He/she would probably then add costs against you for wasting everyone's time.Every generation blames the one before...
