Don't think I can cope at work now I'm pregnant!

I think what is more relevant is this:-

Is a vet allowed, by the RCVS, to use an unqualified member of staff to carry out the duties you have performed? I don't know the answer to this question but if they are then there is only really the pregnancy question to fall back on.

However, f they are not then this should make them more careful regarding your employment situation.

I repeat my earlier advice to take the RCVS advice regarding pregnancy. You cannot be the first surgery assistant to have a baby!

Ask for a contract... if they refuse and say theyll sack you, inform them that you have been carrying out work that wasnt in the job title (if there is no other nurse, you might have a bit more of a case ) then state will be reporting him to the vets college as you shouldnt be doing some of those things .

If you havnt got a contract-you cant say "it wasnt in the contract" . Are you sure you dont have something-as you will be paying tax-almost proof of employment...

CHARDONNAY, Where did you find the job, if it was Job Centre, they would be very very interested to hear that a company has advertised with then and not given the correct information

This happened to me years ago now, It was for an office administrator.
I went for the interview, and it turned out, the office work was for about 1½hrs a day, the rest in the factory.

I said, "thanks very much but thats not what I'm looking for" etc and told the Job Centre what had happened.

They wrote a very stiff letter of complaint and copied it to me, along the lines of "tell the truth if you want to advertise with us or clear off"

My experience of the Job Centre in the last two weeks is that they will certainly help you if you were to leave, ask for an appointment to see someone. The attitude is "what can we do for you"

    Good luck
  • I've just had an awful morning at work - had a meeting with owner who told me that my job involves opening / locking up, cleaning duties, reception duties & assisting vet with surgeries. I was never given a contract to this effect, nor was the job offer made in writing.

Then she asked me how I felt about job description now I'm pregnant. I said I was unsure I'd be able to cope with some aspects as I don't want to put my baby at risk. She said as there would just be me & vet in clinic, I couldn't get anyone else to cover the jobs I didn't feel comfortable with doing, so I would have to do them myself.

I became upset with this & repeated that I'm not prepared to put my baby at risk. She said if that's the case I should leave, so I bit back & said fine. She asked me to confirm that I wanted to leave in writing (e.g - I wish to leave with imm effect as I feel continuing with my current employment would have an adverse effect on my health now I'm pregnant) so I did this & walked out.

I feel that she took advantage of the situation, I was tired & emotional & know I shouldn't have resigned but I felt pushed into a corner & now I don't know what to do. I can't stop crying.
  • Chardonnary, it sounds like you were pushed into it but that doesn't mean the end... your employer can still be guilty of constructive dismissal or other misconducts. Get down to CAB or speak to ACAS right away!

I'm so sorry that you're getting all this extra stress :( Is it your first child?

  • Yes it's my 1st child. It wasn't planned as I was on the pill, so it's all come as a huge shock. I've phoned CAB & I've been told an adviser will get back to me in 24 hrs.
  • So; you tell them that you are pregnant and they tell you to resign or risk your baby! Nice one.

And totally in the realm of discrimination. Get on the phone to ACAS first thing and try to speak to a solicitor - some offer the 'first half hour free'.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • I could kick myself for resigning, but she caught me off guard, she has kids herself, so I expected her to be more understanding, but as soon as I told her I was pregnant, I think she wanted me out asap, as she's incredibly tight with money & was worried I'd cost her more than I'm worth.

I would call ACAS but I'm worried they won't be interested as I signed a statement saying I wanted to terminate my contract, so I won't be able to go back on it, even tho I did feel pressurised at the time.
