network card not working

this is regarding my nephew's computer. he is on ntl broadband which is connected via ethernet cable to the network card. he did something (which he denies) which made his pc lose connection to the internet. under my instructions he reconnected the modem to the pc using usb cable and connection to the internet was restored.

any idea what he has done to disable the network card? how can i check if it is faulty? hate to buy a new card and find it is software/driver related
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

  • Go into Network Connections and see if the Local Area Connection is disabled. If it is just enable it.

have checked the network connection. it is connected. when we look into the staus the i.p. address is missing. the repair button is greyed out.

went into system- device manager. there is no yellow icon with exclaimation mark next to network card which means the driver is there

  • In Device Manager, right-click the network adapter and Scan for hardware changes. Also try Disable followed by Enable.

  • try start run cmd

    ping 127.0.0.1 (does this work?)

    then

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

    ipconfig /all > c:\1.txt
    notepad c:\1.txt
copy and paste the text here, removing any personal info, names etc..
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
