Skytalk Access Numbers to reduce costs

Hi all

I have just signed up to Skytalk and Skybroadband (both unlimited) with BT line rental.

Does anyone know of any access numbers I could use to reduce costs to landlines and mobiles at both peak and other times?

For international calls, will Martin's International Call Checker access numbers work with Skytalk?

Thanks

You cannot use the 1280 prefix to 'hop back onto BT' and so will be charged by BT if you have Caller Display and/or 1571.

However, you can have accounts with and use (via their prefixes) all of the override providers (1899, 18185 and 18866) so instead of paying Sky an arm and a leg for a non-inclusive call to a mobile, you could make it for 5p connection and 7p per minute!

With regard to the MSE CallCheckers, at the moment, Sky appear to charge exactly the same as BT for calling the various indirect access providers' 0843/4 and 0871/2/3 gateway numbers. They could change to the sort of outrageous prices Virgin or O2 charge for those though.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Yes, the price quoted on MSE call checker is the price you get charged on Sky (cause BT and Sky have the same charges for NGN numbers). I have Skytalk too and can confirm this based on my bills so far. I always use access numbers to make non-inclusive calls to landlines (0.5 p per min) and also to call mobiles (7 p per min). I also use a 0.5 p per min access number to make international calls to India.

aaj1, do you use the same access numbers as Heinz has suggested to call landlines and mobiles (1899, 18185 and 18866). Do I need to register with these companies somewhere online to be able to use them?

You will see on this site that Martin recommends 18185 (although all 3 of them are the same company, 18185's charges are the best on more occasions).

Yes, you have to open an account online and register how you will pay your online bills (as always, Direct Debit is recommended rather than giving open-ended and irrevocable authority to charge a debit or credit card).

I currently use 1899/18185 and have SKYTALK but pay line rental to BT, am thinking of moving to SKY line rental - do they allow the override numbers when on their line rental ?? or am I only able to use them as I'm on BT line rental

Such access is only guaranteed if you have BT line rental and, although it may (I don't know) currently be possible to use them with Sky line rental, that could change at any moment.

If you tot up what you currently pay 18185/1899, then calculate what those calls would cost you if you changed to Sky line rental and then deduct the lower line rental cost, you'd have a good idea whether it's worthwhile or not.

Skytalk barred access a while ago to their line rental customers.

    "Indirect Access Calls
Sky Talk Customers on the Sky Voice and Broadband Network can not make calls using a prefix number to access a different telephony provider (known as Indirect Access Calls). "
