Car insurance renewal increase?

Hi

My car insurance renewal came in the other day, it's a TPFT policy with optional extras of windscreen & breakdown cover. For some reason, the total package is now £50 more expensive than last year - has insurance premiums gone up?

I did have to replace my windscreen, will this have affected the premium?

Out of curiosity, I used comparison sites to see if I could get better quotes, but unfortunately are more expensive for TPFT without the added extras and seem a little more expensive than last year - despite an additional years' NCB.

One other thing, back in 2007, I had an accident (my fault), I believe this will be deemed as me making a claim (but obviously the claim would have been the third party)?

    has insurance premiums gone up?
Yes they have gone up and it's been widely publicised.
Increased fraud, personal injury claims, rising costs, 14 years of losses etc.

£50 is not very much compared with some anecdotes we've seen on here.
but unfortunately are more expensive for TPFT
Have you tried looking for fully comp policies?
If you have an old banger and don't intend claiming for your own car then try getting quotes fully comp with a large excess.
There are fewer companies that do TPFT these days and therefore going fully comp you get more choice and may get a better quote.
Putting a large excess on also reduces the premium but doesn't apply to the third party section.
Some companies (esure and sheilas wheels spring to mine) don't do TPFT, so you are reducing your search significantly.

You can also reduce the premium by putting a named driver on.
Ideally you want someone mature, female and with a clean driving licence and no claims ro convictions. If it happens that they never get to drive the car during the year - then never mind.

Yes you have a fault claim, but many insurers only ask for 3 years history in relation to claims, so it may now be out of date for insurance purposes, although you MUST read the question.
Some insurers may want 5 years history.
Answering the questions correctly is important, both to reduce the premium and to ensure you're properly covered.

Widely publicised and discussed on this part of the forum at least daily. Don't you just love it when people read before posting the same questions over and over again?

  • I got my renewal and its gone from £285 to £450, Ive checked the mearkat and confused sites and they are all quoting £4-500.

Has everyones insurance gone up this much in a year?? its over 50% in 1 year and i haven't claimed or anything !

I cant afford this increase. What does legal cover actually do, as this might need to come off for a start??

Yes (well there are variations in the increase, but basically yes).
    I cant afford this increase
Have you consdered other forms of transport - bicycle, train, bus, taxi, hire car, walking, motorcycle??
I gave up my car last year. It's possible to subsidise expensive methods some of the time, if you can also use cheaper methods.
What does legal cover actually do, as this might need to come off for a start??
It provides legal assistance to help you claim for the things that are not covered by your own insurance. This might be personal injury, your exess, time off work sick, cliother/accesorie/contents in your car etc.
You may be able in some cases to get a "no win no fee" deal from a solicitor, but they are only intersted in cases where they get their fees paid e.g. personal injury, so they probably won't be willing to help if you only have an excess to claim.
You could also claim yourself off the other insurer, but they are sometime quite tardy and reluctant to pay and you may be unable to deal with that whilst you are dealing with teh consequences of your accident and you won't have the legal training which may be required if they aren't forthcoming.
You won't get a straight answer, beacuse some people will tell you it's a waste of money, others will say it's worth it's weight in gold, but it's only about £25 right?

I would say look into your transport options.
I've managed very well without my car.
Now and again it's inconvenient but with the money I've saved (proabbly thousands) I can afford to get a taxi or hire car now and again.
  • Legal cover is for legal expenses in event that you go to court over a claim or accident. Helpful in trying to recover uninsured losses.
  • Have any of your circumstances changed in any way since last years policy? If not possibly your postcode rating may have risen unfortunately through no fault of your own. Postcodes are one of the most important aspects of car insurance prices these days.

Well it's black and white with this. Fault or non-fault. Thats all they are looking at.

Even non-fault can have reprecussions for future quotes.

Shop around, use the online sites for fully comp, and increase the excesses to at high as you can. Go through a cashback site as well if you can.
It is a claim you need to put down. and it is a fault to yourself.

  • Me and the missus was in a right state. Both our insurance runs out within a few days of each other so its a big bill at the best of times!
Swinton sent me a renewal price of £550. Paid £320 last year! I phoned them and they said insurance companys are rewriting their terms and will be increasing cost by about 45%. I told them I would shop around! Direct Line quoted £952. Remember this is for one car!!! A 02 Mazda 626...! Not even had a speeding ticket since I started driving, 42 now. I did the usual compare search and found fully comp for £400 with Axa. Looking closer at my renewal Swinton had a quote from Axa for T P F & T for £542. I think Swinton have peed on their biscuit... All try Axa!
