The First Group train companies (and Arriva Trains Wales) are having an offer for over-55s travelling off-peak. This allows some fairly long journeys starting at £15 return. See the Club55 site for details. (Someone put the link in please.)
It's probably easy to book straighforward journeys, but I just spent more than two hours online and on the phone to First Great Western trying to book a journey. I've now given up and will buy my ticket at the station tomorrow. Of course this means I won't get a reserved seat. This was extremely frustrating but I learnt a couple of things. It looks as though your journey must be via one of the normal "reasonable" routes. The train companies seem unable to make a booking even when you can tell them exactly which train you intend to travel on.
I'm going from Cardiff to Penzance, which you'd expect to be straightforward. However, you're not allowed to travel via Westbury and the shorter route via Taunton tries to get you on a Cross Country train from Bristol, even though there's plenty of slow trains run by First Great Western.
Still, I shouldn't complain, I'll still be saving over £60.
