State Pension Query

Hope someone can help
Just found out although he retired a few months ago my dad hasn't claimed his state pension  as he can't find the date of his divorce,
Can he still claim without this does anyone know, or does anyone know where we could find it out, its 20 years ago since they got divorced and my mum has been passed away nearly 15 of them, so I can't ask her,

any help at all gratefully recieved

thank you

he can be paid an entitlement based on his own contributions, but if does not have much and is looking at claiming against his ex wife then he needs to confirm he is divorced. if he can remember the area that he was in, then he can ask the courts to help. you cannot get the information from general registery office (as one son asked if we could not just phone them!)

Not having a divorce date shouldn't stop him from claiming his State Pension, and he should claim without delay. The divorce date would normally only be needed if he wasn't going to get a 100% pension.
  • he's worked all his life so I assume his contributions would be enough for a full pension without claiming against my mums anyway.
I'll harass him to get it sorted, thanks for all your help
  • You can obtain a copy of the decree absolute from the county court (probably the closet to him at the time of divorce) by just writing to them. It would need to be the one that heard the case.
His txx codse wou;d also prove that he is single as it is different to a married couples code. L or H

that does not prove he is single

Common tax code letters and what they mean

Letter Reason for use L For those eligible for the basic Personal Allowance - 647L for the 2010-11 tax year. It is also used for 'emergency' tax codes (read more in the section 'If you're on an emergency tax code') P For people aged 65 to 74 and eligible for the full Personal Allowance Y For people aged 75 or over and eligible for the full Personal Allowance T If there are any other items we need to review in your tax code, for example the income-related reduction to the Personal Allowance (read more in the section 'Effect on your tax code if your income is above £100,000').
Tax code ‘0T’ means your allowances have been used up or reduced to nil and your income is taxed at the relevant tax rates.

K When your total allowances are less than your total 'deductions' - read more in the section 'How tax codes are worked out'
