Access point - desperate help needed

According to the box my old Netgear DG834GT can be used as an access point

Trouble is...i have not got the 1st clue of how to do it

Am I correct in saying that I could place the Netgear in the bedroom and connect to the router downstairs in the lounge?

My set up is currently like this

1. Thomson TG585 v7
This is plugged into the wall and a cable runs from it into the master phone socket.

2. Lounge computer is connect to the Thomson using a Netgear WG111T

3 I have my old Netgear DG834GT going spare and I would like to use it to connect to the network

Can this be done and would somebody be gracious enough to spend some time giving me an idiots guide of how to do it

I have also recently bought a Tenda wireless n150
