Verona, Bologna, Milan, Bergamo.
If you go to any of those, you'll be able to visit Venice in about 2 hours and each of the others. About 90 minutes Verona to Milan on a regional train for example.0 -
If you choose Florence I know of a good family friendly hotel close to the centre, reasonably priced but clean and homely(not luxury).0
