Best place to sell a dSLR

Well, my Panasonic L10 has had lots of use by me, but i'm looking to upgrade and move over to Canon or Nikon. I'd also flog my accessories at the same time.

Does anyone know where's the best place to sell camera gear? I'm worried that if i go on ebay i'm going to get fleeced (and i've never sold anything on ebay before)

nb. not trying to sell via MSE :)

Seek a used camera shop in your area, otherwise ebay it. start it as the minimum price you want to accept for it and see what happens.

  • I recently sold a Fuji camera on ebay, started the auction @99p and set a buy it now @ price I'd like, and set a reserve at a few £ below the buy it now, If it doesn't reach the reserve you've only lost the listing fees, and you get to re-list for free, mine went £2 less than the buy it now, but over the reserve price.

Camera gear is pretty popular on ebay.

For most things they'll reach what they're worth but if you're unsure then set a reserve price so if the bidding doesn't reach that price you don't sell it for a price you're not happy with.
The difficulty is setting a reserve price that you're happy to accept and that doesn't mean your item doesn't sell.

Personally I woudn't bother with a reserve though.

I would put it ebay as individual items. I think that a camera shop will not offer you a great deal, then only as (possibly) a trade-in against a new one from them.

I don't have an ebay account but have sold a few things on my daughter's account. The last thing was a Nikkor lens - I was more than happy with the price I got for it.

I was looking at a Sigma lens last week on ebay, I almost got my daughter to bid for it, but didn't in the end. My daughter asked me what my max bid would be; I said £200 - it sold for exactly that ! You would be lucky to get half that from a camera shop.
  • As mentioned photography gear is pretty popular on ebay so you're likely to get plenty of interest and therefore more bids. I just sold 2 lenses and got good prices for them (in one case more than I paid for it on ebay 2 years ago!). In both cases I put no reserve and started at 99p.

Just make sure you put a good comprehensive description and some decent images of the item(s). Nothing turns me off a listing more than a ropey or stock image, and a description that just lists the spec that I can find on a million other sites. I want to see the actual camera and some details of what condition its in.
  • Thanks all.. i think my worry is that its pretty rare camera, mainly because Panasonic completely overpriced it. Thankfully i bought it at a very reasonable price at the time.

I think i'm tempted to hang on to it for the moment, until i can afford a new camera without having to flog this one. It still takes decent pictures.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/kirwilliam/4883504956/lightbox/

Sadly though most of them seem to be shutting up shop these days.

I would wait until there is a free listing weekend on ebay, do your research on what you would accept at the lowest price, and start the auction at that price.
Then you get what you want and only pay fees if you sell it.
You could also consider part exchange at a good camera shop for your next one if you can bear to let it go!
    Good luck.
NO EXCUSES - THIS YEAR IT'S PERSONAL..........
  • I've decided i'll just keep it, while it is in good nick and still producing decent photos.. I can't bear to let go of it!
