No Gas Supply

On reading through house details just about to sign contracts on a house only to find out there is no gas supply in the property, gas location outside in front garden. Does anyone know how much it will cost to have this done?

It cost us a few hundred quid to get a meter moved - they come and assess how much work it is - but there was a chart showing you basic cost plus per m...
I think we had to buy our new new meter box too...
  • I think on the few occasions we've had to fit a gas supply to a property its cost around £500 - but thats where the gas pipe is within 20m of the property.

Its expensive and slow. Took me four days off work to get the job done, and I did eventually have to resort to refusing to get off the phone until they found someone to come and do the job. Total time was over 4 months.

It's possible, but they are terrible at organisation, and have a monopoly on the work!

Don't sign until you get a quote as it can cost thousands. It all depends on where the nearest pipework is and whether it needs upgraded. Contact National Grid in the first instance. This can take a few weeks to get the quote though.

  • It cost me £284 plus VAT to have a gas supply installed at my house in Hampshire in April 2009.

I had the inital gas survey done the week I moved in and was given an appointment to have the pipe installed a few weeks later. The guys turned up at 7am on the day that they specified and had installed the pipe and supply and gone by noon. The distance from main to meter is less than 20 meters so it was done at the cheapest rate.

Getting the meter fitted afterwards didn't cost me anything because I got my electricity supplier to arrange it and promised to use them for my gas supply too.

In terms of timescale, I arranged the appointment for the site survey before I moved and it was done the week I moved in. I had a gas supply up and running 4 weeks later.

  • It depends how close the nearest suitable gas pipe is.

My parents were quoted £30k. So they went with calor gas instead.
