Trying to set up my wireless router but doesn't work!

Right, i will keep this nice and simple. I have had broadband internet for the past 10 days and yesterday i got myself a Linksys WRT54G Wireless router so both myself and my partner can connect our Macbook Pros up to the wireless internet.

But the problem is we cannot seem to connect onto the wireless network. It shows up when searching for internet connecting even when its is open without a password or with a password it does not want to connect?!?!

I can plug my laptop directly (as i am doing now) into the broadband modem and it works so i have no idea what is wrong?

If you can reply speaking English and not too much computer language that would be fantastic.

Many thanks

You could try changing the wireless channel on the router to see if that helps.
I'd do a scan with inSSIDer to see if there are any wireless networks that might be interfering, dunno if its available for Macs though.
I guess you've tried moving any cordless base stations you may have away from the router.

  • Hi. This link might help. I am also not a techie person but the instructions there seems fairly easy to follow, so it might be easy for you too. :)

I hope that helps. :) Good luck.

If its showing up as you say on your mac then you should be able to connect - unfortunately I aint on a mac but I'd suggest going to a mac forum and ask there, or on lynksys website - my linksys just shows up on a list of available networks and you just have to enter the security code on a different computer and it works fine - I did have to set the security code to make it untouchable by other computers within range on the street.
  • I had this reply from someone on another forum views:

could be wrong so dont shoot but from what ive just googled macbook pro is wireless n and your router is wireless g/b could be wrong though actually on wiki shows youre router as defo wireless g/b
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linksys_WRT54G_series
so you need to find out about your macbook pro if it only supports wireless n then its a new router, stay ethernet connected or buy a usb g/b wireless network adapter

Is this correct? The apple website states my laptop has the following:

Wireless AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi (based on IEEE 802.11n specification)2; Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) wireless technology

Looks like you need a new router then, bit limiting if your wormhole Xtreme only supports wireless n especially when you are out and about.

  • The details from the Modem website is:

    WAN

    Router IP - 85.81.11.179
    IP Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.255

    LAN

    IP - 10.0.0.1

    IP Subnet - 255.255.255.0

    DHCP - Server

So confused i thought this setting up should be easy.
