Cancelling holiday

My son recently booked a holiday for next year with a group of friends but has changed his mind as he wants to come on holiday with me and the dates overlap.
I understand he will have to lose his deposit but is he obliged to pay the insurance premium?
Also would it be possible for him to transfer his deposit and use it towards a flight only booking as I haven't booked our flights yet?

Doubtful you can transfer the deposit, how long has he had the insurance as usually you have a 14 day money back guarantee. If he's had it longer than that the insurance company may let him change the dates he'd have to ring them. Canx off his mates holiday may have issues as they may be under occupied and have to pay more each, they would be better to find someone to take his place and do a name change, also if he has only paid a low deposit he is liable for the rest of the deposit.
