Advice please: best time to book a specific holiday for Dec 2010.. ?

Hi all

i really have my heart set on a specific holiday - 2 weeks at the dreams la romana, dom rep, from 2nd december.

I finally have saved enough ... but i'm nervous of booking- the price on thomascook website has fluctuated by around 200pp for the last few weeks - it's gone back up by £20 since yesterday?!

Anyone any guidance on when is best - on the one hand i dont want to risk not getting this holiday - on the other i dont want to pay way over the odds! We're going to celebrate mny hubby's 30th birthday there.

If i leave it longer what factors will make the price go up/down?

Any advice really appreciated

Lynz:)

if you have a specific destination and hotel that you want to go to then my advice would be book it up now and do not look at the prices again.

ask yourself would you be gutted if you held off an dthen it was not available? if so then you just need to take the plunge.

You keep checking it isnt helping as every time you do it shows people are interested so its pushing the price up. You could also do with clearing your cookies, someone will be along later to tell you how. Cant you get a travel agent to watch it for you and advise you how many rooms are left incase its the last one and how many seats are empty on the plane. December is generally a slack time in the travel industry as everyones preparing for christmas but it all depends how important the holiday is to you as to how long you wait. If it sells out have you got another choice if not then you need to book asap.

You have to watch some sites they monitor how often you look for something.

They then adjust the price(usualy up) to try to get you to book.

    Try shopping around.

Decide what price you do want to pay and when it gets to that BOOK.

You can only risk the try to get rock bottom price if you are prepared to not go.

Don't set your heart on a particular holiday. Do a list of what you like about this one and consider if these features are possible with other holidays.

Go via Quidco and get a couple of % cashback, then don't check the price again...;)

Have you tried other websites for the identical holiday?

Have you been into a Travel Agent to see if they can beat the price?

Ask yourself how gutted you'd be if you finally decided to book and there was no availability.

If it's your dream holiday and you have the money to pay for it, I'd bite the bullet and book rather than risk disappointment.
  • thanks for all the great advice
    - eek at cookies- it had crossed my mind but i thought no, i'm being paranoid lol. Has gone down as well as up over the time - i don't check every day, lol, maybe every few weeks. and i never search for the hotel, just for holidays to the area - thought i guess that still has demand implications.

I know i shouldn't set my heart and i would settle for others if i missed out. Thomson's website has reportedly had only 'one room available' for any hotel i've looked at including this, for weeks and weeks... so i'm not convinced in asking how many rooms are left lol - unless i pretend i want to book maybe 40 rooms :D

I'm into quidco thanks to the site and the advice about having a price in mind and going for it is good - i do have a ballpark figure in mind.

Guess i just wondered do all holidays go down in price the more 'last minute' they get really.

    I'll keep thinking!

That might happen but equally demand could continue and prices goes on rising. If you are really set on a specific holiday and the price is acceptable now book it, don't look again and look forward to your holiday knowing that it is all arranged.
