Landline rental

Recently I saw adverts in several newspapers saying BT's monopoly over the rental of landlines had ended. I've also been phoned on a number of occasions by gentlemen from India suggesting I might like to move to Toucan Telecom and save a few pounds on line rental.
Does anyone know if there are other, cheaper straightforward alternatives to BT line rental? I make virtually all my calls through 1899 or similar so I am only interested in the rental aspect rather than call charges - unless, of course, they are free!

There are several options rather than BT but its doubtful that you would find them any cheaper in the long run.
Only BT is obliged to allow you to use a CPS and companies such as 1899/18185 so while you may save 50p a month on line rental you won't be able to use 1899 for your calls.
Also remember that when they say "free" calls 24/7 for £xx they are not free calls as you are paying £xx even if you are away from home.0 -

Thanks. The guys who phoned from Toucan were pretty pushy. I was so annoyed with the the way they blithely assumed I was going to sign up after barely a minute's spiel, I found it hard not to just drop the phone on them. Getting these guys to understand 'no thanks' is a real struggle.
On balance, it seems best to stay with BT for the time being.0
