I'm not sure why your advisor said that, there are lots of educated, intelligent, hard working and experienced people signing on every week.

Oh I know that, I have no doubt that there are many people better educated and with so much more experience than me signing on. I live in a city famed for it's chav's and scroungers so let's just say the local job centre isn't the nicest place to be!

Thank you so much for taking time to reply, it's great to hear from somebody who is in the same position as me. I was beginning to feel like I was the only 2010 graduate without a job.

Everybody who knows me knows I am looking for work. Everybody on facebook/twitter knows I am looking, I go on about it every day :o

I have had such an awful day today, feeling so fed up so it's really nice to hear I'm not alone in this! I'm getting up at 7am everyday and job hunting constantly until at least 7pm at night. I'm applying for all I can but there really isn't even much to apply for. I applied for about 30 jobs last week and I haven't heard a thing back from any of them, makes you wonder why you bother wasting your time.

Back at the job centre tomorrow, was so hoping I would have something by now. Even more annoying is this is my third visit and I still haven't had a penny from them so I am having to borrow money to get there!

Fingers crossed both of us get sorted soon!

    you're more than welcome!

    fingers crossed for you!

and yes, the job centre was terrible with my case as well :/ told me wrong days to go in as well at one point, not good when it's 15 miles away from me! I hope they sort out your money for you soon!

    Depends on the degree.

In truth, so many young people have been conned by the educational establishment (read empire), and by self-serving politicians. Even their parents have let them down by not telling them the truth (so proud that 'our kid' is going to university, I suppose).

What is the truth? Most degrees are worthless, as are the so-called universities that issued them. A trade or a proper technical qualification is usually a better choice.

yeah, depends on what exactly you want to go on to do, as for many people degrees are a must have for their future career choice..

even so, the amount of experience you get from going to university is huge, such as; working as a team, using various resources, working individually, working to deadlines etc etc the list is endless really!

so I always personally feel it's always a brilliant time to bring out many skills that you've picked up from it and apply it to any role in the future

and you should feel proud that you stuck to it and finished it :) a lot of people can't do that

Just be glad that you have your degree now.

Imagine possibly paying 9k a year lol. Truely madness. Thank god I finished mine.

I only had 2 reasons to get a degree.

    Anyway good luck OP.

Try volunteering at your local citizens advice if it interests you.

Feeling really down with all this now, why anyone would actually choose not to work is beyond me. Having nothing to get up for in a morning is so depressing, as is spending every day alone whilst everybody else goes off to work.

I'm applying for work every single day, sending CV's out, chasing them up. Everyone I know is aware I am looking for working and 'keeping an eye out' for me. I don't know what else I can do. I am bored out of my mind. I want to do some volunteering, but there is nothing on my doorstep, and at the moment I think I am going to have to park my car up at the end of the month because I cannot afford the insurance, nevermind petrol and other costs that come with running a car. Buses are expensive, and I can't ask anyone to borrow money... everyone is doing so much already e.g boyfriend is sorting xmas. Does anyone know of any type of volunteering I could do from home, something that gives me a reason to get out of bed in a morning. Just even something for now, until I can get some money saved up for my can insurance. I cannot sit around for 16 hours a day anymore.

    Hi

I graduated in mid September and I have been applying for jobs every day. I had three jobs interviews on Tuesday from jobs that I saw on Gumtree and was offered a job by each employer.

The jobs on Gumtree were proper jobs not like some of the scam jobs that are on there and I now accepted the second job offer because it was the best job out of the three.I had lots of interviews before I found this job which is not related to my degree but is a area that I have experience in.

Are just applying for jobs related to your degree or any job ?

Are you in London if so then you will find a job if you keep looking.

I was looking on jobsites every day and applying for at least two jobs a day before I found a job that I was happy with. I was also offered 2 Jobs before I found the right one and I had only been looking for less than 2 months. I would get up at 8 am to look at the jobsites and then start calling and sending emails from 9-5 for job applications.

Maybe I am just really unlucky. I get up at 7 every day when everybody else is going to work, and have a list of around 15 jobsites that I spend the entire day on, refreshing and applying for whatever positions I feel I would be able to do. By that I don't mean just jobs related to my degree, I mean anything I could actually do...for example I've been ignoring the tanker driver, personal trainer vacancies. I've been going through the phone book sending CV's out.

I've chased applications up, and there's 70 odd people going for the same job. I just feel I have no chance.

I don't live in London, which is unfortunate as it seems to be the centre of the job universe!

I know that it is hard but you have to faith in yourself that you will find a job have you throught about applying for one of the charity fundraising jobs as they are always on the jobsites just to put some money in your pocket.

Have you try agencies or handing out your CV in the shops.

I would set yourself a deadline to find a job because it gives you something to aim for.
  • Have you tried looking at the websites of employers in your area?
Perhaps make a list of employers say within a 10 mile radius of your home and go to the careers section of the website.
    Include large and smaller employers.
Include retail, utilities, Royal Mail, logistics, construction, manufacturing companies, telecomms, hotels.
They may not have the job you'd really like but getting something recent on your CV and a reference helps to get you a bit closer and it is certainly the case that it's easier to get a job if you're already working than if you're not.
I don't know your area so can't suggest names of companies to look at.
PM me and I'll do some searching too if you wish.

    Thanks for your replies.

I have tried the deadline thing, every Monday I say I will get a job by Friday. I have been to the job centre three times now, and each time I leave I say I will get a job and won't have to go back there. I really, really am trying, I wish people could see that :(

Running On Empty, thanks for the suggestion. I do look on companies on websites, but I don't live in a huge city compared to London, Manchester etc so obviously there isn't a lot available. In the last couple of years I've looked & found jobs for members of my family, so I am pretty 'up' on ways of finding jobs, just don't seem to be able to find one for myself.

It just feels like for every job I apply for there are 100 other applicants much more experienced and better qualified... I don't have a chance.
