Novice gardener & green-ish potatoes

Hi

Hope someone can help... I have just picked some potatoes from the ground and some of them are green. I'm sure I've read somewhere you shouldn't eat green potatoes... now, is that true? Can I put them back in the ground? Or will they 'ripen'?

On another note, some are really tiny, again, should I put them back in so they grow?

Sorry for the stupid questions and thanks in advance for any help!

There is no point in putting them back as they won't do anything now they have been dug up... the green potatoes you can use if its only a small bit of green (cut it off) but if more than half the potato is green discard them as they will cause upset stomach (the green is caused by exposure to light and it makes the green bits very bitter and toxic).. as for the small ones just boil them whole they are perfectly edible but they won't grow anymore ...

  • If you put them back they will grow, but not until next year and as they are small you'll not get a good harvest. If you can't hold them to clean then, pop them in the compost heap. Otherwise, clean and cook them.

And don't eat the green ones!
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • Thanks for the advice!

And next year, earth up your potatoes better, so that all the growing tubers are covered with soil.
