I am sure someone will know the answer to this (but I am a bit dumb)....please...
I have BB (wiith talktalk for what it's worth) and have now a stable connection after some (external) issues a couple of months ago. I am having a friend come to stay in my house whilst I am away Monday to Friday and wonder how I make it posible for them to use my Internet with their laptop. I know that if I try to connect to a nearby netwrok, a password is needed - so is that what I have to do? If it is, which of my passwords is it that they will need (not the actual password you understand).
I would appreciate some help - I don't relish the thought of ages on hold to an outsourced callcentre.

Your router will have some kind of security on it. If you didn't change it from the default it should be on a sticker on the bottom of your router (should be marked as some kind of WPA/WEP passcode). If you did change it, it'll be whatever you changed it to.
(If it's still on default you really ought to change it)0 -
I see -
It does (and it is still on it's default setting...:o) - so - what will they need to do - ask their computer to connect/search - and then , when prompted, input the paswords...? Is it that simple (see, said that I was dumb)?

Yup. The one that says WPA or WEP is the one they'll be after. Click on the network, it'll say something like "this network requires a password", input the key from your router and that should be them.
There will probably be two passwords on there, one is for your router admin (for network maintenance, e.g. changing the passcode) and one is for access to your network.0 -
I'm lost already -
your second paragraph just went waaay over my head.
I am so stupid.
Where will I find these access codes. are they something that I once had and lost? (But am sure I can find again if I can understand what I am looking for....)0 -
Sorry - didn't mean to confuse! There will be one that has a username and password (usually admin) which is used for changing settings on your router. There will be another that will say something like WPA or WEP passcode next to it - this is the one your friend will need to get on the network.

It takes very little, rest assured....
On the back of the router there is
1) Wireless Network name - blah blah
and
2) Wireless password -so I understand then that this is what they will input having searched for, found, clicked on the above name/numbered talktalk (code) network...
Yay! I get it now.
Thank you.
Also though - if they decide to connect with a wire (would that be wire-ly or wire-fully), is there some other process to follow... (other than connecting the ethernet cable at both ends - or is that not an option....)0 -
Yup, sounds like you've found the right thing

If they connect with a wire they shouldn't need any password if you've left everything as default.0 -
