Is it worth buying salon hair care

I've just tried some of my boyfriends vosene after my other thread and it has stripped some of my hair colour. I am tempted by salon products but are they worth the money?

  • Any shampoo with Sodium Lauryl Sulphate or Sodium Laureth Sulphate (both are industrial cleaners) in it will strip colour from hair and dry and irritate your scalp - unfortunately to get a shampoo without these in you have to pay more.

I used Aveda Shampure for many years but went to another brand because I fancied a change - BIG MISTAKE - my hair dried out so I'm now back with Aveda and will never change again. Best shampoo by far IMO :D
  • Salon products have always been great for me. I have used Bed Head by TIGI for years and because you only need a small amount, it has lasted me a long time. I still have the same salon sized shampoo from last year and I'm just getting near to the bottom and I wash my hair nearly every day. A lot of hairdressing products are pure shampoo rather than concentrated like some shampoos you can buy in the supermarkets so they can last a fair amount of time.

I think if you are considering spending money on salon hair care, it would be wise to go to the hairdresser and see what products they can recommend because some products affect different hair types in different ways.
  • Most definatley. Salon shampoo and conditioners are worth paying the extra. I also use the tigi brands and Kerastase. It would devastate me if I had to use supermarket or chemist hair products.
  • Hi, don't you find the upkeep of salon products expensive though?
  • I personally find the upkeep of cheaper brands harder. They last a lot less than a salon sized bottle of bedhead shampoo or other professional brands. My current shampoo has lasted me since before Christmas and I wash my hair constantly. It just depends really :)
  • I have been using salon products for about 10 years. My hair is in much better condition than when I used ordinairy products, which actually means less hair washing so I don't find it works out any more expensive, you use less too.

Agree! I used to use high street lines and my hair was course, frizzy and just never looked that good. I use salon products and found that the condition instantly improved. It was only accidentally that I found myself using salon products. I used to be very sceptical but after using what was a freebie (without even knowing it was a salon line!) I was so impressed I went out searching for it.

I do think some suit my hair better then others and it really depends what your needs are, what your water is like (eg hard/soft) how many times you wash your hair...etc as well as more personal issues such as dry, damaged, coloured, dense, fine, oily....etc and would imagine even certain brands may suit one hair type over another.

I also find that when it comes to the salon lines, if your going to splurge and cannot afford all of it, go for the masques and leave-in products as I have noticed the greatest difference in these product types.

Ebay is an option but you really goota know your stuff as there are so many fakes out there. There are websites like HQHair, Lookfantastic, wantthelook and etc who sell with a discount. Watch for delivery though as it can really ruin every saving! Good to use with a friend (bulk buy) or if they have discount days/free delivery codes.
  • Trust me its worth using salon brands, I used them for years and used to change my hair colour from bleach blonde to black and everything inbetween and my hair was still sleek an healthy, but then I started using cheap brands and they just stripped my hair made it limp and dry and even though salon brands obviously cost more its for a reason, i've gone back to using kerastase and swear by them especially their treatments.
  • I think if you spend as much as you do on hair color then spend the extra to have the salon shampoo and conditioner to make it last longer!
  • TK Maxx often have salon hair products at a lower price - I have picked up big salon bottles of Tigi, L'oreal and other makes there. I agree with the others - you don't needs as much and I find they last far longer then high street brands plus my hair feels and looks better.
