Buying an old electricity sub-station

We are looking to buy a small plot of land that used to house an electricity sub-station.
The transformers & cabling were removed over 20 years ago and all that is left of the station is a small dilapidated brick building. The plot is quite overgrown and now contains several large trees.
A Land Registry search did not show who owned the land and we have approach the historic electricity company for the area who are currently conducting a search of their records to see if they do actually own it.
Does anyone have any experience of buying off a utility company, or have any comments that could help us in our quest?
