as turning up at an airport, bag and passport and going to a desk and asking if any flights available due to cancellations, my aim is ot get a cheapie deal, not sure if this is possible though.

You can buy a ticket at the ticket desk on the day if you wish. I wouldn't expect to get any deals though. Most likely you will have to fork out for a full fare ticket which will be far more expensive than booking in advance.0

I doubt it if you can find a cheap ticket if you'll be purchasing it the same day that you plan to leave. And taking a chance on a passenger cancelling ticket at the last minute would also be very slim. I would suggest booking your ticket ahead of time if you want to scout for bargains, so you can compare the prices.Mr. Mulla0
